Fabric Folds

A painting can be understood as a two-dimensional membrane where the painter internalizes the external physical world and externalizes the interior subconscious world. The membrane where this internalization/externalization of the world meets is a ‘skin’, or the painted surface.

In a similar way, my recent paintings allude to the flat dimension of fabric as it touches and clothes the body, and is the membrane separating the world external to the body and the internal body concealed underneath.

Perception of dimension and differentiation between the physical and the emotional is lost in this closeness, visual clarity is blurred, and presence becomes understood through the fragmented play of fabric, colour, fold. The presence of the body is perceived through abstraction and loss of dimensionality. While the physical body is present, at the same time it is absent.
